Lab visit to the Princeton University
The main goal of Łukasz Richter trip was a lab visit in a group of Prof. Howard A. Stone at Princeton University (NJ, USA). In collaboration with Paweł Żuk from Prof. Stone's lab they recently started theoretical analysis of results obtained during his research internship at Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal in Bordeaux, where Łukasz used surface forces apparatus (SFA). During lab visit they were able to theoretically analyze results obtained in SFA. They created a simplified model of a flat capacitor with two dielectric coatings covering both electrodes. By solving the Nernst-Planck equations coupled with the Poisson equation researchers were able to prove that upon application of the alternating electric field there is an excess of both anions and cations in the vicinity of electrodes. This difference in concentrations of ions inside and outside of the center of the system creates osmotic pressure. This can explain forces measured in the SFA.
During Łukasz stay at Princeton University, he also gave an invited talk at the group meeting. Additionally, he had an opportunity to listen about projects performed currently in this group. One such discussion resulted in the idea of collaboration. Therefore, this trip resulted not only in interesting scientific results but also in potential future cooperation with a world-class scientific facility.
